CHACACHACARE
Pack a picnic lunch,
swimsuit and come along for a boat ride to Chacachacare, the most westerly
offshore island.
LIGHTHOUSE
TRAIL
(5 hour tour)
The hike begins
at the isthmus between Peruquier and La Tinta bays and climbs gradually
northwards 3 kilometers to the lighthouse atop the highest hill (273
m). The most picturesque view of the Bocas islands, as well as Trinidad
and Venezuela is from this lighthouse.
A moderate, leisurely
pace is the best way to enjoy the scenery and unique natural environment
of the island.
SALT
WATER POND
(5 hour tour)
The more adventurous
hiker can anticipate a walk through history and the possibility of seeing
iguanas as large as seven feet. This 1.2 kilometre trail gradually wends
its way through undergrowth to a height of 81 metres before descending
to the pond.
End your day on
one of the islands beautiful beaches.
ECO-EDUCATIONAL
TOURS
Eco-Education tours
are available on the Chaguaramas mainland as well as the offshore island
of Gasparee. A mainland tour includes:
- An audiovisual
presentation of the Flora, Fauna, History and scenic beauty of Chaguaramas.
- A tour of our
Interpretive Centre with its nature displays, general information
and history of Chaguaramas; live exhibits, (Boa Constrictor, Caiman,
etc) and souvenir shop.
- A visit to one
or more Institutions, or historical tour of this former U.S. Naval
Base.
- A hike on one
of our trails.
Eco-Educational
Tours of the mainland take a maximum of 5 hours. A full day tour is
recommended, but any section of this tour is available on request. The
following trails are highly recommended:
TUCKER
WOODS/NORTH POST
A 7 km hike through
lush vegetation to a ridge 530 metres above sea level, and down through
cultivated forest to the North Coast.
COVIGNE
RIVER
The trail begins
at a Nutmeg Grove past historical sites, then upriver through a narrow
twisting gorge, up a waterfall, and ending at an emerald bathing pool
some 15 ft. in diameter.
EDITH
FALLS
About 1.5km long,
this trail winds its way gently through mixed vegetation, to end at
the base of Edith Falls, which is approximately 180 meters high and
truly awe-inspiring.
